I’m in the middle of A Storm Of Swords at the momentand I’m rapidly becoming disenchanted with this author/storyworld.
At the point I am at in the book, the reader is introduced to an army of castrated slaves who all have to kill puppies, and then later human babies, in their training, so that they will grow up to be super hardcore. Which just seems sort of… over-wrought? Like, very much so? To the point where I found it sort of funny, which made my reading experience incredibly surreal.
I know what’s coming up in the series, and it’s pretty much a bunch of sensationalized/stylized Extreme Gore with a generous helping of very calculated squicky horror. It misses the mark in terms of the gritty historical callbacks that (I think) the author is going for.
Okay, honestly? Here’s what it’s like. You know how sometimes when you’re masturbating, your fantasies become sort of comically skewed or over-the-top in the heat of the moment? And then after you have an orgasm, looking back on those same images that you were thinking of, you realize how tasteless and/or bizarre they were? (unless that’s just me… is that TMI for a tumblr post? I’m assuming it happens to other people…)
But seriously the BEST way I can describe GRRM’s writing is like if someone with a medieval torture/violence fetish was masturbating, and had just gotten to the point where their fantasies got really distorted and wonky, and then wrote an entire fantasy epic, and then had their orgasm, and then didn’t go back to edit it once the hormones had worn off. This is some of the funniest ASOIAF criticism I’ve ever read! I can’t say that stuff bothered me as much as it did you, though gosh I wish GRRM would chill out with the rape! I’ve heard it said that GRRM must have a rape fetish and personally I don’t think he has. He never lingers on describing the grisly details of any of the thousands of rapes in the series (most take place off page) I can see what he’s doing trying to create this horrible patriarchal world in order to make the struggles of his female characters all the more impressive and sympathetic. I respect that goal but jjeeezzzz does he over-egg that particular pudding. It gets like a “gritty” 90s comic book at times GRIMNESS, GORE, RAPE, DARKLY INTENSE DARKNESS AND MORE RAPE!!! I personally see this as an artistic rather than a moral or political failing and it doesn’t distract too much from all the stuff I love about the series
Can’t be worse than Ayn Rand’s rape fetish. That stuff gets disturbing really fast…
See, here’s the thing.
You can’t advocate for disability rights if you’re only interested in certain kinds of disabled people.
Yes, it sucks for wheelchair users to be treated like they are mentally deficient. You know who else it sucks for? That group you apparently think is cool to call mentally deficient.
Yes, it actually hurts more coming from people we thought were on our side.
If I can’t drool, I don’t want to be a part of your revolution.

Well, this is only moderately creepy…
This Droid Razer commercial on Hulu says that this is “the first Droid to become self-aware”.

When a condition:
* Incorporates lack of consciousness into its definition
* Measures lack of consciousness by physical responsivenessAnd then.
It’s found that some people, diagnosed the exact same way as everyone else, show that they are conscious while diagnosed…
